Ashwagandha has been used in Ayurvedic medicine for thousands of years.
This adaptogen has been used to relieve stress, increase energy and boost testosterone.
The thing that facinates me about it today, though, is its ability to improve memory and cognition.
There’s something in Ayurvedic medicine called a “Rasayana”. That’s the word for something that helps a person maintain their youth, both physically and mentally.
Ashwagandha is a Rasayana.
(Say that 3 times, fast)
“the Ashwagandha treatment group showed significant improvement in both immediate and general memory compared to the placebo group.”
Ashwagandha and memory decline
Lots of people worry about losing their mental edge as they get older. As a guy witihin shouting distance of retirement age, I can vouch for that.
Something that helps me worry a bit less about that is that taking Ashwagandha makes you smarter.
There was a randomized, double-blind, placebo controlled study done on Ashwagandha in 2015.
After using Ashwagandha for 8 weeks, the partcipants were tested and the Ashwagandha treatment group showed significant improvement in both immediate and general memory compared to the placebo group.
They also showed siginficant improvement in executive function, attention and information processing speed.
For me, this connection betweej Ashwagandha and memory makes this a must-have in my supplement arsenal.
My current favorite method of adding Ashwagandha to my daily routine is in coffee. I take a lot of pills, capsules and powders already and having an option as great as coffee is a real plus.
I found a coffee that has Ashwagandha extract and a bunch of other nootropics and adaptogens in it.
It helps my mood, increases my mental clarity and boosts my memory, all in my morning cup (or two) of coffee.
It even tastes good.
